Getting Out There

Getting out there
YoxterWe know of no better way to enjoy wildlife than by getting out and experiencing the richness of nature first hand, in the wilds of Somerset.  We have 63 open access nature reserves covering the range of important habitat types found in Somerset from flowery meadows to bluebell woods, lakes, reed beds and heath.  As they are free to visit at any time they offer unrivalled opportunities to explore some of the wildlife gems still to be found in the county.  Click on the links below to find out about the wildlife on your doorstep.

For those that prefer to explore the wildlife rich spots of the county in the company of a knowledgeable leader, our Area Groups put on nearly 250 walks, talks and special events a year covering a wide and varied spectrum of local and more global wildlife.
Members and local people have recently enjoyed the melodic song of nightingales on a warm summers evening, watched the territorial displays of ‘singing’ and wing flapping night jars and even warded off dive bombing black backed gulls!  We have explored the legends of the trees, enjoyed fungal forays and visited farmers who are doing their bit for wildlife.

Getting out there is good for you.  We have evolved as a race to feel content in resource-rich environments which is why we positively respond both physically and mentally to spending time outside in the countryside.  Scientists now think that a walk in the woods is as effective at reducing stress and mild depression as therapy and drug treatments. It’s now official, a visit to our nature reserves will help relieve the stresses and strains of every day life.  Click on the links to find your nearest reserve.
